Background
During the WNBA playoffs, Google Brand Studio highlighted breakout searches and game statistics to assist with barrier-breaking efforts in sports coverage. As strategists developed a content roll-out plan, data visualizations were needed to represent highlighted statistics.
The Solution
Our team created templates and a system to visualize this data using a flurry of dots, lines, squares, and triangles to create a squad of basketball playing ‘Googins.’
We visualized select insights for various WNBA teams through the creation of character-driven website headers and social media templates by conceptualizing scenes that reflected unique team brand colors and traits that were unified by a geometric illustration style. A similar approach was extended to visualize NBA insights during the Finals. These highlights were shared across trend reports and Twitter posts.
Process
For this, my teammates and I divided the teams up and designed layout templates for each of our assigned teams. Collectively we went through design crits and refinements to create cohesive layouts and illustrations. At the end of the project I also animated some of the layouts we designed to give them a little movement.
